Nigerian famous Afro-fusion artist, Damini Ogulu popularly known by his stage name as Burna Boy has emerged as the winner of Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards which was held in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. The 2019 edition of the award which celebrates black people in film, music and arts, was held at the Microsoft Theatre in California, United States of America.
The BET Award for Best International Act is an award given out to successful celebrities to honor the outstanding achievements of international artists every year. It was reported that Wizkid still holds the record for most wins in this category with two awards. While Burna Boy joins Wizkid, 2baba, Davido, D’banj and Ice Prince as winners of the award from Nigeria.
In 2019 BET Awards for Best International Act, Burna Boy was nominated alongside with Mr Eazi from Nigeria, Giggs from United Kingdom, Dosseh from France, Dave from United Kingdom, AKA from South Africa, Teni from Nigeria and Aya Nakamura from France. It was also reported that Burna Boy began this year music with hefty and fan-favorites tunes including Dangote and Killin Dem, featuring Zlatan Ibile.
This follows his quick rise to stardom in 2018 which made him one of the top five stars of the year. On Sunday 23rd June 2019, Burna Boy created history by winning the Best International Act at the BET Awards held in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America.
Burna Boy defeated Teni and Mr Eazi and emerge as the winner of Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards held in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. The award was received by his mother who also doubles as his brand manager.
While receiving the award for his son, Burna Boy’s mum stated that ‘every black person should remember, you were Africans before you became anything else. Burna Boy’s mum told Africans in the Diaspora during her acceptance speech. After making her speech, Burna Boy’s mother receives loud cheer as she gives powerful speech while accepting her son’s BET Awards for Best International Act.
Burna Boy won the award for Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards that was held in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. Though he was at the event with his girlfriend, Stefflon Don, he wasn’t available when it was time to receive his award so his mum went on his behalf. Burna Boy’s mum gave a short acceptance speech that was so powerful and moved everyone present.
Speaking with grace and poise, she said: “Thank you very much BET. Thank you Africa, because that is the constituency for which we got noticed in the first place. And the message from Burna, I believe, would be that every black person should please remember that you were Africans before you became anything else. At this point, a loud cheer went up in the venue. “Thank you,” she concluded, lifting the award plaque and left the stage.
It would also be recalled that Davido won the same category of award in 2018 and was presented with his award during his live performance at the 18th edition of BET Awards.
Also in the BET Awards, American female rapper Cardi B scored seven nominations, including nods for best female hip hop artist, best collaboration, video of the year, album of the year and the viewer’s choice award. She was among the winners on Sunday night, taking home album of the year for her studio album ‘Invasion of Privacy’, and best female hip-hop artist. She also performed as the opening act.
Another American artist Tyler Perry was honored with the Ultimate Icon Award and he gave a powerful speech too. Another America female artist, Mary J. Blige performed one of her hits single after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Also, Slain Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was honored with the Humanitarian Award at the BET Awards held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America.
